Niveau intermédiaire

The words “a” (has), “as” (have), “ai” (have) and “à” (to) are pretty similar. However they DO NOT have the same meaning.

It is easily remembered that “ai”, “as” and “a” are the conjugation of the verb “avoir” (to have) conjugated at the first, second and third person singular. They all can be replaced by “avais” ou “avait”.
Example:

J'ai
Tu as
Il a

“à” is a preposition that indicates the direction, the proximity, the origin and the belonging.
They cannot be replaced by “avais” ou “avait”.
Example:

Il a prêté son livre à sa soeur.
