The direct object indicates what or who is aimed by the action expressed by the verb. It is a part of the verbal group.
Example:
Tu as promené ton chien.
Le professeur interroge les élèves.

In order to know what the direct object is, you can ask “Quoi?” (what?) or “Qui?” (who?) after the verb.
Example:
Tu as promené quoi? Ton chien.
Le professeur interroge qui? Les élèves.

It is to be said that the direct object cannot be moved and generally follows the verb (except for a verb in the imperative form).
It can be a personal pronoun or even a name, a verb in the infinitive form and a proposition.
Example:
* Tu choisis un gâteau et tu le manges.
* Mange-le
* J'ai vu Isabelle hier.
* Elle adore voyager.
* Il me semble qu'il sera là.
