In French, the tense called “passé composé” and corresponding to the preterit in English, is composed of the auxiliaries “être” (to be) and “avoir” (to have) and the verb at its past participle
It can be difficult to chose, here is some tips to be able to make a choice out of them.

A. Verbs with the auxiliary “être” (to be)

Every pronominal verb S'appeler, s'écrier, se laver
Every passive tense La cuisine est faite par les cuisiniers
Some transitive verbs (movement) naître, arriver, monter, mourir, sortir, rester, venir...

B. Verbs with the auxiliary “avoir” (to have)

Every transitive verbs (direct or indirect) J'ai mangé une pizza. Nous avons parlé à ta mère
The verbs être and avoir themselves J'ai été en Angleterre. Elle a eu des jumeaux.
Most of the intransitive verbs Ils ont courru. Nous avons opté pour la discrétion.
Every impersonal verb Pleuvoir, venter, grêler
