The words “or” (but) and “hors” (except for, out of) are French homonyms but DO NOT mean the same thing.

The coordination conjunction “or” (but) indicates an opposition a little bit like “mais” (or).
Example:
J'ai un rendez-vous chez le docteur or je travaille.

The word “hors” is a conjunction that indicates the exclusion of a place or the exception.
Example:
Mange hors de ta chambre (out of a place).
Tous les élèves sont partis en sortie scolaire hors deux. (exception).
